Product Description:
ZEONAM® 2gm contains Aztreonam, a monobactam β-lactam antibiotic highly effective against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is ideal for patients with penicillin or cephalosporin allergies, as it shows minimal cross-reactivity.
Primarily used in hospital-acquired infections, UTIs, respiratory tract infections, sepsis, and post-surgical infections, ZEONAM® is a valuable agent in critical care and resistant pathogen management.
Key Benefits:
-
Broad activity against Gram-negative aerobes, including resistant strains
-
Safe alternative for patients allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins
-
Useful in ICU protocols, especially for Pseudomonas-related infections
-
Can be used in combination with other antibiotics for empirical therapy
How It Works:
Aztreonam inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3) of Gram-negative bacteria. This causes cell lysis and death, making it bactericidal.
It is resistant to many beta-lactamases, allowing it to remain effective against resistant pathogens.
How to Use:
-
IV Infusion: Reconstitute with sterile water, then further dilute in appropriate IV fluid (e.g., 0.9% NaCl) and administer over 20–60 minutes
-
IM Injection: Reconstitute with 6 ml of sterile water for injection
-
Typical adult dosage:
-
1–2 g every 8–12 hours, depending on infection severity
-
-
Dosage adjustment is required in renal impairment
Note: To be administered under strict medical supervision only
Safety Advice:
-
Monitor renal function, especially in elderly or renal-compromised patients
-
Rare cross-reactivity with other β-lactams, but always perform allergy assessment
-
Report any signs of rash, fever, or diarrhea during treatment
-
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed
Precautions:
-
Not effective against Gram-positive bacteria or anaerobes
-
Use with caution in patients with a history of colitis or renal impairment
-
May cause local site reactions with IM use
-
Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or stored under refrigeration (2–8°C) for up to 24 hours
