Product Description:
DELFOMYCIN®- 4gm is a high-dose intravenous formulation of Fosfomycin, a potent, broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic. It is primarily used in the management of serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing organisms.
Fosfomycin disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis at an early stage and demonstrates strong activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including Pseudomonas, E. coli, Klebsiella, and Enterococcus species.
Key Benefits:
-
Effective against MDR and ESBL-producing pathogens
-
Useful in treating complicated UTIs, bacteremia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and osteomyelitis
-
Excellent tissue penetration, including bone, lungs, and urinary tract
-
Can be used in combination therapy with other antibiotics in critical care
How It Works:
Fosfomycin inhibits MurA enzyme, an essential catalyst in bacterial cell wall formation. By interfering at an early step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis, it causes rapid bacterial lysis and death.
Its unique mechanism makes it less prone to cross-resistance and highly suitable in refractory infections where other antibiotics fail.
How to Use:
-
Reconstitute the powder with appropriate sterile diluent
-
Administer as intravenous infusion over 30–60 minutes
-
Dosage and frequency depend on infection severity and renal function (e.g., 4g every 6–8 hours)
-
Should be used under the supervision of a qualified physician in a hospital setting
Safety Advice:
-
Adjust dose in patients with renal impairment
-
Monitor serum sodium levels and renal function during treatment
-
Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fosfomycin
-
Ensure proper hydration during therapy
Precautions:
-
Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or within the manufacturer’s recommended time frame if refrigerated
-
Avoid mixing with other IV medications
-
Not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary
-
Use with caution in elderly or critically ill patients
